Wrong Solutions Yield New Problems - Genesis 16:1-6
See All...
INTRODUCTION
Most problems have multiple solutions, but some solutions yield new problems. Abram and Sarai knew that the Lord wanted to give them a son, all they had to do was trust the Lord to accomplish what He had promised. But by all appearances there was a major problem, because in spite of their efforts, Sarai bare Abram no children. Instead of seeking the Lord for proper solutions to the problem, Sarai constructed a plan whereby her maid Hagar could bare a son for them. This solution was indeed a solution, but it was not God’s. Hagar had a son, but this son turned out to be a thorn in the flesh of Abram and Sarai’s son Isaac, and this trouble continues to this day.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
- (For smaller children) When Saul did not wait for Samuel to make a sacrifice before going to battle, he brought problems on his own household (1 Samuel 13:8-14 [8] And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
[9] And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
[10] And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
[11] And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
[12] Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
[13] And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
[14] But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
See All...; 1 Samuel 31:1-2 [1] Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. [2] And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul's sons.
See All..., 6). - What problems did Abram and Sarai have before introducing Hagar into their solution? What new problems came about because of their decision to have a son through Hagar?
- What should Abram and Sarai have done in order to find a proper solution? What would likely have been the solution given by the Lord? Would God’s solution have created new problems?
